Overview
Situated in County Galway on the Western seaboard of Ireland, Connemara is home to some of Ireland’s most picturesque and breathtaking scenery. Consisting of a broad peninsula between Killary Harbour and Kilkieran Bay in the west of County Galway and County Mayo, Connemara is home to a number of distinctive and scenic geographical features, including the Twelve Bens Mountain Range, a multitude of serene lakes, and Ireland’s only fjord – Killary Harbour.
Connemara is an important Cultural centre in Ireland, with one of Ireland’s largest concentrations of native Irish (Gaelic) speakers to be found here. This area within Connemara is known as the ‘Gaeltacht’, and hundreds of Irish students flock to ‘Irish College’ in the Gaeltacht each Summer in order to improve their knowledge of the Irish language. Connemara is also home to a number of pre-historic relics and landmarks, including Megalithic tombs.
